User account and classes

When you register for an online course at RCC, WebCT automatically creates your account and adds you to the correct class--DO NOT create your own account or attempt to add classes through WebCT; it will cause your official account to stop working.

Reasons your web classes may not appear in your account...

  • The term has not started yet: Classes appear on the first day of the term after 8 a.m.
  • You just registered: Your web classes may not appear for up to 48 hours after you register. Call 245-7514 or 956-7514 to be added manually
  • You were just added to the class from the waitlist: Your web classes may not appear for up to 48 hours after you are added. Call 245-7514 or 956-7514 to be added manually
  • You manually created an account: WebCT automatically creates your account and loads your classes into that account. Your courses will not appear in any account that you manually create. To access your official account, log in with your preset username and password

If these problems do not apply to you, or if you have waited 48 hours and still don't see your class, contact the help desk: 245-7514 or 956-7514. You can also e-mail us: webct@roguecc.edu (supply your student ID).

Accessing classes (off campus and on campus)

No matter where you're accessing WebCT, you will need to...

  1. Follow the WebCT Technical Orientation step-by-step to configure Java and other settings
  2. Go to webct.roguecc.edu and log on to WebCT with your username/password

To access WebCT off campus, you will need...

    1. A computer that meets the minimum requirements
    2. Access to the Internet using a compatible web browser

To access WebCT on campus, go to...

The Library at any RCC Campus. Check out a computer in the student lab; computers in the reference area of the Library cannot access WebCT courses.

The Computer Labs at any RCC Campus. If you have trouble logging in to lab computers, ask one of the lab aides (in the blue vests). To see when labs are available on all three campuses, check the computer lab schedule.

If you did not attend your class orientation, ask your instructor for information on how to begin the class. Remember, some orientations are online - check the Instructor Orientation page for your course.

Logging in (trouble)

If you try to log on but get the message, "You entered an incorrect username or password," make sure you are using the correct username and password.

  1. Shut off your computer
  2. Unplug the power to the modem for 15 seconds
  3. Plug the modem back in
  4. Restart your computer
  5. Try logging in to WebCT

Logging off - Important

Make sure to close your browser by closing the program, or log off (in the myWebCT area) when you are finished with your WebCT session. If you leave your workstation unattended after logging on to WebCT, anyone can access your account while Netscape or Internet Explorer is running. They will have access to all courses in your name and will be able to take quizzes, see your quiz results and send e-mail or post messages to the bulletin board in your name.

Pop-up blockers

WebCT uses pop-up windows to deliver quizzes, email and other important features. If a pop-up blocker is installed on your computer, either disable it when using WebCT, or configure the blocker to allow pop-up windows on the RCC WebCT site.

To learn how to shut off the pop-up blocker built into Internet Explorer, watch the "Security Settings and Pop-up Blockers" video in the WebCT Technical Orientation.

For instructions on disabling and configuring other common pop-up blockers, which may be hidden in anti-virus software and search bars, click here.

If you have the ability to configure your firewall, set it to allow port 80, the port used for WebCT web traffic.

McAfee firewall error message

If you are using a McAfee firewall, the following message may appear in the McAfee Internet Security Section: "Firewall error message: This is an invalid access method." On the Privacy settings tab, uncheck the option labeled Enable "referrer" Filtering in web site requests.

Quiz tool tips and hints

  • After answering a question, press the save question button and wait for the yellow check mark to appear

Respondus LockDown Browser

To take secure tests and quizzes in WebCT, you will need the Respondus LockDown Browser; this special web browser prevents you from surfing the Internet or using other programs during a test. For the LockDown Browser to work, you will need Internet Explorer; no other browser will operate correctly with the LockDown.

To learn how to install and use the LockDown Browser, watch the tutorial in the WebCT Technical Orientation.
